Matthew 9:9 "Jesus left there, and as he passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's office, and he said to him, 'Follow me.'"
Tax collectors were despised and rejected for political, social, and religious reasons.
Jesus' act of approaching Matthew was astonishing. Why did Jesus choose Matthew as His disciple?
Jesus knew Matthew's deepest thirst.
He was bound by the bonds of this world and wanted to get out of it but had no way to do so, but he wanted to be set free and was looking for a Savior who would set him free.
We judge people by their outward appearance, but Jesus sees what is in their hearts. He looks deep into our hearts, even to the depths of our souls that we are not even aware of.
He has a special interest in and invitation to the rejected, the despised, and the lost.
Jesus has come for all of us, the least of these!
Matthew needed Jesus because he knew what he was like.
Jesus will surely meet that need. He will certainly meet our needs as well!
Jesus is calling to you, too!
