Gospel Reflections 1107: God's correction and discipline

Psalm 25:9 ‘He will judge and guide the poor, and teach the poor the way of the Lord.’

This passage sings of our trust and hope in God, who guides ‘the humble’ and ‘those who suffer’ in the right direction and teaches them the path they should follow.

The ‘poor’ refers to those who are aware of their own weakness, those in situations where they have no choice but to rely on God—the ‘humble’ who humble their hearts and kneel before God; in other words, those who do not rely solely on their own strength but seek God’s help.

‘Judging and guiding’ means that when we are uncertain about life’s choices or facing unjust suffering, God takes us by the hand and leads us to the ‘right boundaries’ and the ‘order that must be upheld’.

It is a promise that God will restore us to the right path in life when we find ourselves lost.

‘Teaching the way of the Lord’ means that God teaches those who fear and revere Him ‘the best way for human beings to live’.

This truth reaches our hearts only when we set aside our pride and humbly seek to learn God’s teachings.

Praying to understand the way of the Lord is a privilege granted to Christians.

Faith means trusting in God and taking a step forward, even when we do not understand His will.

Although God may correct and discipline us, He will never forsake us.

Therefore, we may come to God just as we are—weak and unworthy as we are.

And we need only surrender our whole hearts to Him.
