Psalm 61:2 ‘When my spirit is overwhelmed, I call to you from the ends of the earth; lead me up to the rock that is too high for me to reach.’

This expresses the heartfelt prayer of a person seeking salvation from God when they are at the very depths of despair.

The ‘ends of the earth’ refers to David’s situation whilst fleeing from his enemies, far away from the Temple in Jerusalem (the place where God dwells), and represents a state of mind in which he feels completely isolated and abandoned, with no one to help him.

2. The original words for ‘when my heart is crushed’ imply ‘being overwhelmed’ and ‘fainting from exhaustion’.

It describes a state in which one’s spirit is completely broken, having faced a problem that is beyond one’s own power to resolve.

3. ‘The rock too high for me to reach’ signifies ‘a place that I can absolutely not climb or reach by my own strength’.

Furthermore, in the Bible, the ‘rock’ symbolises a safe stronghold (God’s salvation) that protects us from the attacks of our enemies. In other words, the prayer expresses the plea: ‘Please lift me up from the difficulties I cannot resolve on my own and protect me in a place of safety through Your mighty power.’

No matter how desperate the situation (even at the ends of the earth), our prayers to God will surely reach Him.

When we acknowledge our own weakness and rely on God, He leads us to a high and safe place far beyond human reach.

Just as David, even when he endured the bitter experience of being unable to worship God in the sanctuary, never doubted that God would protect and shelter him in the shadow of His wings, so too should we continue to call upon God at all times.

In Psalm 62, David also declares forcefully: ‘O people, trust in God at all times; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.’
