Luke 1:64 "Then immediately Zachariah's mouth opened ...He began to praise God."
Zachariah had been silent for at least nine months because of his unbelief. But when he wrote the name of his unborn son on the writing board as the angel had told him, "John," his mouth opened and he began to speak and praise God.
There is a great difference between uttering words of doubt and unbelief and opening one's mouth with a heart of thanksgiving and praise. We know that. But all we do is complain. It is painful and unbearable to look at ourselves like that.
We try to be good people, but we cannot be. It is only by acknowledging and accepting that that is the case that we really need God.
God does not tell us to be good Christians! God does not say, He only says, "Come to me." When we, like Zachariah, truly choose God or truly accept God, joy, hope, and praise arise in us.
God is not condescending, deceitful, or false to us sinners, but relates to us with the same sincerity. When we experience that, we too will want to respond in that way, I am sure!
