Acts 27:35 Paul took bread and gave thanks to God before them all, and then he tore it up and began to eat."

How do we react when we are on a boat trip and encounter a storm that could sink the ship? We may not have time to eat and may be overwhelmed by anxiety. Paul was in the middle of a storm when an angel appeared to him and told him a sure message from God.

Paul already knew they would be saved and tried to encourage everyone, but they were still in the middle of the storm. Paul encouraged everyone to eat, and after taking some bread and saying a prayer of thanksgiving to God, he broke the bread and began to eat.

When everyone is in a state of anxiety, one person who does something different is strangely affecting everyone. And moreover, when people see that one person acting with conviction, they are mysteriously influenced by that person.

Like Paul, God has promised us that He will come for us, too. And moreover, the victory or defeat has already been decided at the Cross. When the Holy Spirit brings into our hearts the promises of God, we will have a growing confidence in God's promises, no matter what circumstances come our way.

The light of God's presence with us may not be so visible now, but it will become a sure light in our hearts as the world gets darker in the future. We have been given assurance of the future, but we are at a point in time where we have not yet reached it. That is why we need the light of hope, we need the light of joy within us through God's presence alone. When we welcome God into our hearts, it becomes a light that brightens our surroundings!
