Luke 1:72,73 "The Lord has compassion on our fathers and remembers his holy covenant. This is the oath that he swore to our father Abraham."

Our history is the history of God's plan of salvation for mankind. When Adam and Eve sinned, He did not condemn them but declared war against Satan. This is God's unilateral covenant of salvation for us human beings (unilateral because no matter what God does human beings on its own, without a converted heart, always failed their side of the covenant. So it was God fulfilling the human side too). This is not a covenant that God offers us because we are good people. It is God's unilateral covenant that He wants to get us back, no matter what we are (because it is only when we are back to Him that change starts to happen).

God has been faithfully keeping and fulfilling that covenant for centuries. And God is faithful in each of our lives as well, working to win us back. When we know what God's unilateral covenant of love looks like, we want to respond to Him in some small way, with gratitude and joy (this is the beginning of change). And by being immersed in fellowship with God, we can feel a great sense of security and hope.

We have always been unfaithful to the covenant, but our God is the one who has remained faithful to the covenant no matter how far we go. The focus is not on our unfaithfulness, but on God's extraordinary faithfulness!
