Mark 2:10 "Let it be known that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins."
Jesus had a plan for the salvation of mankind before sin entered the world. We have been created by God and kept alive in His love. As proof that His love is real, He gave us free will. God knew that those who are touched by true love will always choose Him.
Jesus is the One who can do nothing that He cannot do. The One who entered the human genealogy to get us back could have changed us as He wanted, but what Jesus did was forgive us, heal us, and accept us.
Jesus knew that in order for us to properly use our free will, we ourselves must be forgiven, healed, and accepted, and He showed us this so that we could understand it. Jesus supports and envelops us from the bottom up, despite the word authority. Those who experience this will want to respond to Jesus and will gladly choose Him using their free will.
