Psalm 140:12–13 ‘I know that the Lord upholds the cause of the afflicted and grants justice to the poor. The righteous will give thanks to your name, and the upright will dwell in your presence.’
This passage sings of the ‘certainty’ and ‘hope’ that those subjected to unjust suffering and malice will ultimately be protected and rescued by God.
For David, the phrase ‘I know’ represents not merely intellectual knowledge, but an unshakeable conviction of faith based on his past experiences.
The entire psalm is a prayer for deliverance from those who act with malice (those who hurt others with their tongues or through violence), and it concludes by presenting the assurance that ‘even if the wicked gain the upper hand for a time, ultimate victory and peace are granted to those who trust in God’.
Even if we, like David, possess the faith to say, ‘I know’, our faith can waver when faced with extreme circumstances.
At such times, we may vent our unbelief by asking God, ‘Why?’, or we may cling to our God, saying, ‘You are my God. O Lord, listen to the voice of my supplication.’
In this way, we fix our focus on our God and look up to Him, and in that process, we come to be certain that God will help those who cry out in their suffering.
Our God is a hundred times more faithful and sincere than we are.
