Gospel Reflections #1103: Transformation Despite our Failures

2 Samuel 15:24 ‘Zadok and all the Levites were carrying the Ark of the Covenant, and they kept it there until all the troops had left the city. Abiathar was there too.’

This passage depicts a scene of faith and loyalty in which the priest Zadok and the Levites carried out the Ark of the Covenant during the tense situation when Absalom, the son of King David, staged a rebellion and David fled from Jerusalem.

Whilst the royal court was in turmoil and the hearts of many of the people were turning towards the rebel Absalom, the religious leaders, led by the High Priest Zadok, recognised that David was indeed the true king anointed by God and demonstrated their loyalty through their actions.

The Importance of God’s Presence (the Ark of the Covenant) The Ark of the Covenant symbolises ‘God’s presence’ itself.

They carried the most sacred Ark out of Jerusalem so that God’s protection might be with David during his flight.

This action was also intended to demonstrate that, in the face of a political coup, religious legitimacy lay with David.

Although the Ark of the Covenant had been carried out with great effort in verse 24, in the following verses 25–26, David commands, ‘Take the Ark back to the city (Jerusalem).’

David refused to use the Ark of God as his ‘talisman’ or ‘political tool’, and entrusted the fate of his life and throne entirely to God’s sovereignty, saying, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, He will bring me back here again; but if He says, “I am not pleased with you,” then let Him do whatever seems good in His eyes.’

The other high priest, Abiathar, who had accompanied him, is said to have ‘gone up’ (remained to watch over the situation, or offered prayers) until all the people had left the city.

Ebiathar, together with Zadok, played a vital role in supporting David to the very end.

This passage is a pivotal scripture that starkly contrasts human power struggles (Absalom) with pure trust and surrender to God (David and the priests) amidst the worst crisis of human betrayal and political upheaval.

Just as with David, God transforms those who have gone through various failures and trials into people who entrust themselves completely to His will.

We should seek a faith that enables us to wait, entrusting ourselves to God’s will—which is invisible and far beyond human comprehension—rather than relying on visible, human reasoning.

God desires us to surrender ourselves and live with Him at the centre of our lives, and He is the One who guides us.
