1 Samuel 23:20 ‘If the king wishes to come down, let him come now. It is our duty to hand him over to the king.’
The inhabitants of Keilah, who ought to have rewarded David for his care and zeal in saving them from the Philistines, were afraid of Saul; so rather than suffer an attack on David’s account, they sought to hand him over.
However, the people of Ziph were even worse.
They sought to betray David and hand him over to the enemy, not out of loyalty to the king, but out of hatred for David.
The Ziphites’ concern for the king was merely a pretence.
When they offered to help capture David, they were acting out of sheer hypocrisy.
People change their allegiance depending on their circumstances and have no qualms about repaying kindness with ingratitude.
Furthermore, though the thoughts within our hearts are invisible, they inevitably manifest in our words and deeds.
Because this world is under the influence of sin, it may seem as though such injustice prevails, but God will ultimately rescue those who believe in Him and obey Him faithfully.
To obey faithfully is not so much about our actions as it is about the direction our hearts are turned.
Even in the worst of circumstances, we should not focus on the situation itself, but rather on the promises of God, who reigns over all, and strive for the outstanding faith that David possessed.
Just as our God guided David, so too is He guiding us.
