Gospel Reflections #985: Not the Solution, but the Relationship

Psalm 63:1 ‘O God, you are my God; I earnestly seek you; my soul thirsts for you. My body longs for you, as in a parched and weary land where there is no water.’

This expresses a deep ‘spiritual thirst’ and ‘devotion to God’, even in the midst of a desperate situation.

It is also interpreted as referring to the period when David was driven from Jerusalem by his son Absalom’s rebellion and was fleeing through the desert, fearing for his life.

David addresses God not merely as an abstract concept, but as ‘my God’, with whom he has a personal covenant relationship.

Furthermore, the harsh reality of the wilderness before him symbolises the spiritual reality of humanity, which cannot survive without God’s help.

The core of this verse is that ‘even when circumstances are at their worst, our primary concern is not the resolution of the problem, but fellowship with God Himself’.

Although David was driven from his comfortable palace, he confesses that his soul longs for God even more than his body thirsts for water, and this leads into the praise in verse 3: ‘Your steadfast love is better than life’.

I believe that when we come to know God personally, commune with Him personally, and live in His love, we feel a sense of alienation and a longing for what lies outside God’s realm.

This is not God’s punishment for our unbelief, but rather His grace, always seeking to turn our weak hearts back to Him.
