Psalm 133:1 ‘Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity!’
This is a famous scripture that sings of the wonder and blessing of friends in faith and family walking together with one heart.
The ‘brothers’ referred to here do not merely denote blood relatives, but the entire community of faith (such as the church) that believes in the same God.
It emphasises the value of people with different personalities, habits and ways of thinking overcoming their differences to help one another and maintain harmony.
This refers not merely to human friendship, but to a bond centred on God’s love.
Psalms 120 to 134 are known as the ‘Songs of Ascent’, sung by pilgrims on their journey to the Temple in Jerusalem.
These verses encapsulate the joy of people gathering from all corners of the land to become one in Jerusalem and worship God together.
I feel that this situation mirrors our own gathering in church.
I long to fully savor the grace and joy of gathering in God’s presence, looking up to Him and centering our lives on Him, rather than on one another.
God is constantly nurturing us as His children.
He is teaching us how we, as God’s children, ought to relate to one another.
