Psalm 59:1 ‘O God, deliver me from my enemies; protect me from those who rise up against me.’

This begins with David’s desperate cry as he fled from King Saul’s pursuers and faced a life-threatening crisis.

It is a tense scene in which David, whilst sleeping in his own home, was surrounded by Saul’s soldiers and escaped through a window with the help of his wife, Michal.

David was innocent, yet his life was being threatened.

And so, David calls directly upon God for help.

Because David emphasises that he is suffering an unjust attack, not because he has committed any sin, this prayer is regarded as a model for those facing unjust suffering who seek justice from God.

Furthermore, by addressing God as ‘my God’, we see that even in the midst of desperate loneliness, he places his trust in his personal relationship with God.

We too may feel crushed by unreasonable circumstances or relationships, but God sees us, takes notice of us, and prepares a way of escape for us.

God does not stand by silently whilst we are crushed by our own emotions.

God seeks to grant us the peace that comes from being united with Him.

This is not a magical grace that improves our circumstances; indeed, such grace would ultimately prevent us from being united with God. Therefore, whilst sharing in our suffering, God draws us closer to Himself.
