1 Samuel 19:6 "Saul listened to Jonathan's words and swore, 'As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.'"

This is the scene where King Saul, moved by his son Jonathan's desperate pleas, accepts them and swears not to kill David.

Driven by fierce jealousy towards David, Saul had sought to kill him. But Jonathan explained to his father how faithful David was and how he had brought victory to Israel.

This passage depicts the moment when that persuasion succeeded, and Saul temporarily regained his senses.

Without Jonathan's presence, David might well have lost his life here.

We wish to believe that our faithfulness and sincerity influence others.

Yet we are not faithful or sincere merely to influence someone.

It is simply the result of choosing to believe in God and obey Him, thereby knowing His love and responding to it.

What Jonathan took to heart was not David's victory in battle, but David's character.

What we reflect of God's love is not good deeds or success, but God's very nature alone.

God is perfecting us to be like Himself.
