1 Samuel 18:1 "When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan's soul was knit to David's soul, and Jonathan loved him as himself."

This depicts the beginning of what is considered one of the deepest 'friendships' in the Bible, blossoming between Jonathan, son of Saul, Israel's first king, and David, who would later become king.

The expression "bound together" carries the Hebrew meaning of "bound together in a bond," signifying the formation of an exceptionally strong and spiritual bond between the two.

The description that Jonathan loved David "as himself" symbolises a self-sacrificing love entirely devoid of selfishness.

Jonathan was the heir to the throne (a prince), while David was a warrior of humble origins, a shepherd.

Though they could have been rivals vying for the throne, Jonathan resonated with David's faith and courage (such as defeating Goliath), forging a deep, God-centred bond of trust.

It is interpreted that through his conversation with King Saul after David slew the giant Goliath, Jonathan discerned the firm faith in God flowing within David and instantly connected with him.

This relationship seems to be depicted here as something that can also exist between us and God.

We too have surely experienced moments when God's presence was palpably felt, and we likely encounter His presence in our daily lives.

Moreover, when we discover a new facet of faith in a fellow believer, or perceive how God is working within that friend, our own souls become bound to God and filled with His grace.
