Psalm 8:3,4 "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him?"
Psalm 8 is a hymn of praise by David, beautifully weaving together two contrasting themes: "the greatness of God the Creator" and "the dignity of humanity, whom that God regards".
Gazing upon the vast night sky (the moon and stars), humanity keenly feels its own insignificance.
Yet the author, David, does not despair here. Instead, he expresses astonishment and gratitude: "Why does God take notice of such a small being as man, and look upon him?"
If we fix our eyes solely on humanity, we live preoccupied with good and evil, superiority and inferiority, constantly competing. In this state, we find little peace, satisfaction, or joy.
But by turning our gaze to the natural world created by God, we can lift our eyes to the God who made it.
Then, we sense humanity's insignificance and God's unfathomable greatness, which humbles us involuntarily.
Simultaneously, we feel the peace of being enveloped in God's love.
In this way, God reveals His existence and power to us so we may understand.
Nothing is taken for granted; everything has been prepared by God for us.
Moreover, the natural world teaches us that God Himself is indispensable to us.
