Psalm 34:7–8 ‘The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed are those who take refuge in him.’

These are very powerful words that emphasise our trust in God and His mercy in responding to that trust.

God, either directly or through His messengers (angels), encamps around those who fear Him and protects them.

This is not merely temporary help, but represents God’s active presence, always by our side, protecting us from enemies and difficulties.

God’s greatness is not merely something to be understood intellectually, but something to be actually ‘tasted’ (experienced) through life’s journey.

This experience refers to the attitude of relying on God as a refuge, rather than on one’s own strength.

This ‘blessing’ does not refer to temporary happiness, but to the unshakeable joy that comes from being in a right relationship with God.

It is not so much that David was rescued from an extreme situation, but rather that when we realise God is with us, always protecting and guiding us, we can find rest in His peace.

God is always with us too, and He always keeps us in His heart.
