Gospel Reflections #926: God is never distant

Psalm 23:1 "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
This brief verse encapsulates the relationship of trust between God and humanity.
In ancient Israel, the shepherd bore full responsibility for the sheep's safety, sustenance, and rest.
The author, David, recognises God not as a distant entity, but as 'my' helper who personally cares for and guides each individual.
Moreover, David himself had once been a shepherd.
Drawing from his experience of risking his life to protect sheep, he was convinced of how faithfully God would guard him.
"I shall not want" does not mean every desire is fulfilled, but rather expresses the assurance that "everything truly needed is provided at the optimal time."
In modern terms, it refers to a state of being liberated from anxiety about the future or the restlessness of "wanting more," with the heart content within God's care.
How do we perceive our God?
This is not merely knowledge, but an image of God built through relationship.
How we perceive God shapes our response and the depth of our trust.
Through daily encounters with God, sharing with God, being heard by God, and experiencing God's love, we can rejoice in God's presence and be filled with true peace.
