1 Samuel 14:44 "Jonathan, you must die. Otherwise, may God punish me severely..."

This is the tense moment when Saul, Israel's first king, pronounces the death sentence on his own son Jonathan.

To understand this verse, the "rash oath" immediately preceding it is crucial.

In the midst of battle, Saul made the people take a self-righteous and unreasonable oath: "Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening."

Unaware of this oath, Jonathan went into the forest and ate honey dripping from the trees, using the tip of his staff.

Later, when God's response ceased, Saul assumed someone had sinned and ordered lots to be cast.

The lot fell on Jonathan.

Saul declared that even his own son would be put to death to uphold the oath he had made.

This shows that Saul's pride and vanity took precedence over God's mercy and family love.

We too sometimes shift blame onto family or friends to justify ourselves.

We also sometimes use the law as a tool for judging others, seeing it only through the lens of deeds.

And we sometimes think that producing results for God's judgment will solve everything.

We must constantly ask God for the discernment to distinguish what we should truly uphold from what we should not.

Furthermore, when we are made aware of our mistakes, we should ask God for the courage to acknowledge them and apologize.

God prepares for us today the discipline of keeping our eyes fixed on Him at all times.

Let us gladly receive this and experience it together with God.
