Gospel Reflections #786: Despite of us being sinners

Zechariah 3:2 “Then the angel of the Lord said to Satan, "Satan, the Lord rebuke you! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?"
Those who honour God and keep His law become targets of Satan's accusations. Satan exhausts his power to lead people into sin, then searches out their sins to declare they cannot be saved.
This word of the Lord's messenger was spoken when the high priest Joshua stood before the Lord's messenger, and Satan stood at his right hand to accuse him of sin.
Satan asserts, "We have sinned. Therefore, we cannot be saved."
Yet Christ does not deny our sin; rather, He defends us by declaring that 'despite' our sin, He Himself bore that sin.
And so Christ rebukes Satan.
It is not Satan but Christ who judges human goodness or wickedness, who determines righteousness.
Satan has overstepped his bounds.
From the time of Genesis, as in God's declaration of war, Christ has directed hostility towards Satan and become our stronghold.
Thus, while Christ redeems the minor sins Satan points out in us, He condemns Satan himself, the root of sin.
God desires so profoundly to save us and to live in fellowship with us that He manifests this longing in every conceivable way.
