Romans 12:17,18 “Do not return evil for evil to anyone, but try to do good in the presence of all. If possible, at least live at peace with all men."
Paul does not tell us to do this. He tells us to be mindful of this.
God knows that we return evil for evil. God knows the effects of sin in us and He knows our weakness.
When we are emotionally moved by someone, we can choose in our thinking whether to react with that emotion or to hang on to Jesus, who can and has done it, even though we cannot react with good ourselves.
It is as if we are being trained in our daily casual life to see if we can make an action (choice) that we truly believe that I cannot live in peace with all people, but Jesus can.
We cannot always do good. We have to admit that we can't, but at the same time we have to admit that Jesus can, and even if it doesn't lead to action, we have to choose to lean on and entrust Jesus in our thought process, and then the Holy Spirit will guide us to action.
Our choice is the ignition point for God's miracles!
It is we who light the fire of choosing God in response to the Holy Spirit, and God will surely make that fire a great light that will never be extinguished!
