Luke 10:26. "When Jesus said, 'What does the law say? And when He said, 'How do you read it?'"

This is what Jesus said in response to the scribes' attempt to test Him, asking, "Teacher, what shall I do to receive eternal life?

It seems to me that Jesus is confirming what we think of the law and how we receive it.

I feel that Jesus is asking us to look at the most important part of the law, to focus on it, and to think about it carefully.

The scribes knew the law, but they did not practice it.

They may not have thought that the law was a manifestation of Jesus' character.

They may not have known that the Law is Jesus Himself.

We, too, may think we know, but we don't really know, or we may be chasing after knowledge and not Jesus Himself.

The Bible reveals Jesus. It is written everywhere about who Jesus is.

We can encounter the living God from the Bible, and by keeping our eyes on Him, we can have a relationship with Him and let Him bring us closer. The Holy Spirit helps us with what we do not understand.

By knowing God's love through the Bible, through prayer, through dialogue with God, and by touching, tasting, and nourishing us with that love, our actions can follow God's will.

It is not "what we do" as the scribes do, but "who we focus on."

Once we set our focus on God, the doors of our hearts will open and we can receive the Holy Spirit.

Then the Holy Spirit does the rest.

Because it is God who raises us up!
