Psalm 16:1 ‘O God, protect me, for I have made you my refuge.’
This is David’s prayer expressing absolute trust in God amidst trials and anxiety; it is a confession of faith acknowledging that ‘the Lord alone is the true place of refuge’ and seeking God’s protection with all one’s heart.
This verse serves as the introduction to the overarching theme of Psalm 16: that those who trust in God will find unshakeable happiness.
Thus, Psalm 16 is an expression of complete happiness that springs from total submission to God.
From his conviction that God is his sole protector, David moves on to a confession of faith in eternal life.
Rather than earnestly seeking help, David is asking for unchanging defence and protection; he acknowledges God as the source of all good, places his trust in Him, and seeks for that relationship to be sustained.
David’s relationship with God had been established even before his trials.
The conviction David had in God when he defeated Goliath would surely have been strengthened through the life-threatening crisis he faced.
In order to build a strong relationship with God, He takes a long time to bring to light who we truly are and to show us just how much He cares for us.
And through each of these experiences, God prepares us so that we may express, with confidence, not a plea to avoid suffering, but the assurance and hope that He is with us.
