1 Samuel 25:10 “Nabal replied to David’s men, ‘Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many slaves these days who run away from their masters.’”

This is the scene where the wealthy Nabal contemptuously rejected David’s messengers.

From this passage, we can discern Nabal’s arrogance and the harsh social circumstances in which David found himself at that time.

Whilst living as a fugitive from King Saul, David had been acting as a benevolent guardian, tending Nabal’s flocks, amongst other things.

According to the customs of the time, it was customary to give a share of the harvest to those who had helped during the festive season of shearing (akin to a harvest festival).

However, Nabal spoke these words to the ten young men David had sent.

Nabal asked, ‘Who is David?’, treating him as ‘merely a runaway slave (an unfaithful servant) who had fled from his master’.

This shows that he completely disregarded David’s authority as the future anointed king, looking only at his low social status and despising him.

His name ‘Nabal’ means ‘fool’ in Hebrew.

He relied on material wealth and was blind to God’s plan.

Hearing these arrogant words, David flew into a rage and set out with 400 men to slaughter Nabal’s entire household.

When we encounter unreasonable words or actions, our emotions often take precedence, and we can think of nothing but winning or losing, superiority or inferiority; yet, even in such a situation, God permitted David to learn about His character.

The Bible tells us that ‘there is suffering in this world’, but perhaps this is a training exercise in God’s love for us, designed to teach us emotional control and patience, and to help us entrust ourselves solely to God.

It is said that Jesus has already conquered this world.

God’s training in love for us is a grace and a blessing that enables us to become one with Him.
