Reflections from the Book of Genesis Chapter 4
Genesis chapter 4 gives us the full picture of the first awful effect of sin in a human heart. Sin broke our relationship with God and so our relationship with our fellow human beings.
Hearts grew selfish and more selfish every day.
Hearts turned their focus on what they want and what they think is right for themselves. Anger crept in and competition started to be the game of life. Life was not so much about God anymore. Life was pretty about who you want yourself to be. This is a pretty sad picture of life and what man came to be under the dominion and power of sin. This is exactly what happened with Cain. He preferred a life, he chose a life, that is free and distant from what God asked them to do for them to stay close with God despite the sin’s dominion over humanity.
When that drastic day came that Cain killed Abel. The apex of sin’s influence in man’s heart. A life was taken away and the first picture of death was witnessed. Adam and Eve could have wished for another story but it already happened.
This is the point of the story that really got me into deep thinking. God did not condemn Cain and did not treat Cain in frustration or anger of what he dead. God showed His great mercies, He hates sin but not the sinner. God patiently waited and waited for Cain to see how loving He is…God gave all His caring protection for Cain see God’s mark of love for him. But sadly chose to live not to glorify GOD. The generation that came through him did not know God. However, God continued to bless them with great talents that they might decide to use for His glory. God never take away a blessing because you are too sinful. He loves the sinners, even the worse sinner like Cain. God was waiting…but Cain was growing harder.
Then it was time to bring in Abel’s replacement. This is where the twist of hope happened. There was only Cain and his generation living apart from the knowledge of God. Then came Seth,
Genesis 4:25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.
Through Seth a new generation came, and this generation is a different one. This generation call on the name of God. They know God, they love God, and they glorify God. The generation of Seth is the generation where Jesus came. The greatest twist in human history.
My dear friend, your life may be needing a twist today.
Jesus’ purpose is to redirect your life. Jesus’ mission is to redirect our compass to the direction towards God. He perfected the life and died to pay your sins, and this is all for you to be redirected back to God.
Sin maybe very heavy and imposing. Jesus’ redeeming love will always win over sin’s selfishness. No sin will be able to stand against Jesus’ redeeming love. Jesus’ mission id you. He wants you badly.
He cares for you and He wouldn’t let go…He is the only way for your twist, today.
