1 Samuel 25:1 ‘Now Samuel had died, and all the people of Israel gathered together and mourned deeply for him; they buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David set out and went down to the wilderness of Paran.’

Samuel was the most important figure who brought the era of the Judges to a close and ushered in the monarchy in Israel (by anointing Saul and David). His death meant that Israel had lost a spiritual pillar, and all Israel mourned his passing.

Samuel was one of the few people who understood and protected David as he fled from King Saul’s persecution. With Samuel’s death, David sensed even greater danger and was forced to take refuge in the ‘Wilderness of Paran’ at the southern tip of Israel.

Moreover, knowing that Saul’s hostility would intensify following Samuel’s death, David keenly felt the need for clear help from heaven.

The story that follows leads to a scene of trial, in which David, immediately after the passing of the great leader Samuel, is tested on how to survive in the wilderness and how to control his own emotions (anger).

We, too, are presented with major turning points in life, moments that compel us to consider how we should live from that point onwards.

It is likely that, whilst facing God in situations where we find ourselves alone, we are taught to acknowledge our weakness rather than our strength, and to rely on God’s power rather than our own.

Whatever the circumstances, we wish to accept them, trusting that God will guide us and help us to grow.
