Psalm 31:3 ‘Truly, you are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake, you draw me out and lead me.’

These are the words of a prayer in which David, whilst in distress, confesses his absolute trust in God and calls upon him for help.

David calls God his ‘rock’ and his ‘fortress’.

This signifies a ‘sure place of safety’ that never wavers, even when exposed to the attacks of enemies or the storms of life.

The phrase ‘for the sake of your name’ expresses a heartfelt plea for help based not on his own merits, but on God’s own honour and promises.

It is grounded in the conviction that, since God is faithful to His nature (His mercy and justice), He will never forsake him.

This psalm was written in a desperate situation where his life was in mortal danger.

It teaches us the importance of acknowledging our own weakness whilst choosing God as our ‘refuge’.
God is our hope.

Although it is impossible for us to place our complete trust in God, I believe that suffering is the catalyst that makes the impossible possible.

God has clearly shown us that ‘there is suffering in this world’, yet He has also clearly declared that ‘He has already overcome the world’.

Like David, we too wish to live lives worthy of God’s name.
