1 Samuel 23:25 ‘Saul and his men went out in search of David. When David heard of this, he went to the rocky terrain of the wilderness of Maon and stayed there. Saul heard of this and pursued David into the wilderness of Maon.’

This passage symbolises the tense situation just before David was completely cornered by Saul.

David fled from the wilderness of Ziph further south to Maon, but Saul, having heard this, tightened his net around him.

In verse 26, which follows immediately, the situation becomes one where Saul is on one side of the mountain and David on the other, with Saul closing in to within a hair’s breadth.

The ‘rock (crag)’ to which David descended is related to the place referred to in verse 28 as the ‘Rock of Refuge’.

This signifies that, through God’s intervention, a ‘refuge’ was placed between him and his pursuers, and is an important symbol demonstrating that God provided protection even in a desperate situation.

Throughout Chapter 23, David consistently demonstrates an attitude of ‘seeking God’.

The extreme situation in verse 25 serves as a foreshadowing of a miraculous deliverance: when human strength is utterly powerless, God causes Saul to retreat through the unexpected invasion of the Philistines (verses 27–28).

God knows that it is only when we find ourselves in a desperate situation that we finally cease to rely on ourselves.

It is when we abandon ourselves that God’s work is set free.

Our crises are opportunities for God to work to the full.

And turning crises into opportunities depends on our faith.
