Psalm 54:4–5 ‘Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the Preserver of my life.
God will repay my enemies with calamity; destroy them in your faithfulness.’
This is a scene in which David, facing a desperate crisis, confesses his unwavering trust in God.
This psalm is based on the episode in which David, whilst fleeing from King Saul, was betrayed by the people of Ziph.
It is a prayer offered at a time when he was betrayed by those he trusted and found himself completely isolated and without help.
How often, even as Christians, do we forget that God is waiting to help us when we are in difficulty?
This psalm makes a dramatic shift from presenting the problem to a firm confession of faith in God’s saving power.
Even though there were those who opposed and sought to betray David, God remained with him, and David placed his absolute trust in the One who never fails.
We cannot even trust in God by our own strength, but it is only when we keenly realise this that we can truly encounter God and place our trust in Him.
Our God is a God who always turns His face towards us, cares for us, and meets our needs.
Let us praise Him boldly!
