1 Samuel 22:8 ‘You have all conspired against me. Not one of you has told me that my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse, nor has any of you shown concern for me.’

This scene lays bare King Saul’s loneliness, suspicion, and unbelief as he pursues David, who is on the run.

Saul is convinced that even his own servants and his son Jonathan have betrayed him and are in league with David.

Saul laments, ‘No one cares for me (or worries about me)’, but this seems to represent the paranoid loneliness that befalls those who have turned away from God.

Saul calls the covenant his own son Jonathan made with David a ‘conspiracy’ and accuses Jonathan of inciting David to attack him.

In reality, Jonathan simply loved David and had no intention of plotting against Saul, yet in Saul’s eyes, everything appeared to be an act of hostility.

Saul perceives this situation as ‘betrayal among men’, yet David’s ascension to the throne is, in truth, ordained by God.

Unable to accept God’s plan, Saul, in his efforts to protect his throne, grows suspicious of those around him, ultimately spiraling into a tragic outburst that culminates in the murder of the priest (the latter half of Chapter 22).

This passage warns us how sin and self-centred thinking can corrode the human heart, causing even the closest family members and most loyal subordinates to be seen as ‘enemies’.

When we are being swayed by our own emotions, we are not turning our eyes towards God.

But the Holy Spirit teaches us this.

Whether we become like Saul or like David depends on whether we choose to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us to acknowledge this, accept it, and entrust it to God.

Even if we become like Saul, our God is a God who never gives up; He pours out His unchanging love upon us and works to turn us back
