Psalm 143:8–9 ‘Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning, for in you I put my trust. Show me the way I should go, for my soul longs for you. Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord, for in you I take refuge.’

This is a prayer of earnest trust and guidance that David offered to God whilst in the midst of suffering.

It also expresses David’s desire to experience God’s mercy as the dark night (a symbol of suffering and despair) comes to an end and a new day begins.

Furthermore, David demonstrates his resolve to take a step not according to his own judgement, but in the right direction prepared by God; this signifies an attitude of self-surrender, entrusting his entire being to God.

David expresses that, in order to escape from the enemies and difficulties that beset him, he takes refuge not in a physical place, but in ‘God Himself’.

The emphasis is on an active act of trust—not merely waiting for help, but ‘running to God’ of one’s own accord.

These verses show us how we should turn to God when we face difficulties.

We must not overestimate our own strength, but seek God’s guidance.

Our relationship with God begins with first knowing and acknowledging our true condition.

And when we are afraid, we make God our sole refuge.

Through suffering, trials, anxiety and fear, we are reminded that we need God.

The crises of our hearts are opportunities to welcome God into our hearts.

It is we ourselves who must open the door of our hearts.

It is never too late.

For Jesus stands before the door of our hearts, never giving up, and continues to knock.
