Psalm 27:1 ‘The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?’

This passage is a declaration of David's absolute trust in God and his proclamation that there is no need to fear, even in the darkness of life or amid the threats of enemies.

In this verse, God’s nature to those who believe is expressed through three metaphors.

① ‘My light’: Our God is the One who illuminates the darkness (despair, confusion, the shadow of death) and shows us the way forward.

Just as darkness cannot remain where there is light, this signifies that God’s presence dispels fear.

We will never be left behind in the darkness.

② ‘My salvation’: Our God is the One who rescues us from specific crises and the hands of our enemies, setting us free.

This emphasises that He is not merely a source of spiritual support, but a practical Helper.

God does not remove suffering and hardship from us, but works to grant us ultimate salvation.

➂ ‘My stronghold of life’: Our God is a strong defensive position, or a safe haven, that protects our lives from the enemy’s attacks.

This does not mean we will never face any attacks, but it is the assurance that as long as we remain in God, He will guard our hearts, and no attack will inflict decisive damage.

By repeating the phrase ‘Whom shall I fear?’ twice, David demonstrates a victorious conviction that, if God is on our side, no earthly power or difficulty is worth fearing.

Although the background to this psalm is a severe situation (tribulation) in which he is surrounded by enemies, David focuses not on the problem but on ‘God’.

This does not mean he is not emotionally afraid; rather, it is an attitude of faith in which he declares of his own volition that he will ‘not fear’, based on the fact that God is with him.

David’s God is our God.
