Gospel Reflections #967: Deep Longing vs Fulfilling a Religious Ritual

Psalm 42:1 ‘As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.’

This is a famous verse that likens the earnest longing for God to the image of a deer suffering from thirst.

The expression ‘longs and yearns’ signifies not merely a hope, but a desperate thirst that is a matter of life and death.

The image of a deer running desperately through the valleys in search of water in the arid land of Palestine symbolises the human soul in spiritual desolation.

The author is seeking not mere religious rituals, but the ‘living God’ Himself, who gives life.

In the passage that follows, he asks himself, ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul?’, encouraging himself to place his hope in God even in the midst of despondency.

Do we long for God with such intensity?

Perhaps, somewhere along the way, we have become complacent with a lukewarm faith.

Yet God is surely guiding us along the path to Him.

This does not mean that everything will go smoothly, but God leads us to acknowledge that we can do nothing in our own strength, and teaches us to rely solely on Him.

And whilst perhaps only those who have experienced it can truly understand the peace and hope we receive by entrusting everything to God, He is certainly still at work beside us even now.

Once we have experienced this, we come to know in the truest sense that there is a heavenly realm, with the windows of heaven open, beyond this earthly world.

And, just as at the end of Psalm 42, we too are moved to praise our conviction in God, saying: ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.’
