1 Samuel 22:1 ‘So David left that place and fled to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father’s household heard of this, they went down there to him.’
This passage depicts a crucial turning point in David’s life, as he flees from King Saul’s pursuers to take refuge in the ‘Cave of Adullam’, transforming from a lonely fugitive into a leader.
In the previous chapter (Chapter 21), David narrowly escaped danger by feigning madness in the enemy territory of Gath. This scene depicts him, having been driven to the brink both mentally and physically, choosing the Cave of Adullam within the territory of Israel as a place of refuge.
David, who had been fleeing alone until then, was joined by his own family, who had gathered there out of fear of King Saul’s persecution.
This symbolises that David was no longer merely an individual, but was beginning to form the nucleus of a new community.
The cave of Adullam later became a gathering place for ‘the needy, the indebted and the discontented’.
It became a training ground, known as ‘David’s School’, which took in people at rock bottom and nurtured them into warriors.
It is said that David wrote Psalm 57 whilst he was in the cave of Adullam.
It emphasises an attitude of faith that trusts in God and takes refuge in Him amidst despair.
God’s timing is truly exquisite.
He does not lead us to become arrogant or full of a sense of superiority; rather, He leads us to reveal our reliance on ourselves and our attempts to protect ourselves, and from there, He guides us anew into a completely different course of events.
And no matter how many times we find ourselves in situations where we might forget God, He reliably brings us back to Him, provides helpers, and prepares the way for us to take a new step forward.
This is the kind of God we have.
