1 Samuel 21:12, 13 ‘David took these words to heart, and because he was very afraid of Achish, the king of Gath, he pretended to be mad in front of the men. He beat the doorposts and let his saliva run down his beard.’

To escape from Saul, David fled to Gath, the hometown of Goliath, the giant he had once slain.

However, the servants of Achish, king of Gath, recognised David’s true identity and began to treat him with suspicion, regarding him as the ‘King of Israel’.

David realised that his past as a hero who had slain many Philistines had been exposed.

Sensing the hostility around him and intuiting that he was in mortal danger, David was overcome by intense fear.

To survive, David, without regard for his dignity, pretended to be mad.

Seeing this, King Achish was exasperated, asking, ‘What use is it to bring a madman here?’ and banished David.

Ironically, this allowed David to escape from the hands of his enemies.

The David of the past displayed noble character, and his moral integrity had won the affection of the people.

However, the David of the present had his faith shaken by trials and exposed his human weaknesses.

Yet God did not leave David in this state, but provided for his needs.

We try to hide our weaknesses, but in extreme situations, those weaknesses are brought to light.

It is through these experiences of being exposed that we are granted wisdom from God.

This makes us aware of our own weaknesses and makes us feel the need to trust in God at all times.

Our weaknesses are God’s grace, which brings out His perfection and strength.
