1 Samuel 21:9 “David asked Ahimelech again, ‘Do you have a spear or a sword here? The king’s business was urgent, so I could not bring my own sword or any weapons with me.’
This is the scene in which David, whilst fleeing from King Saul, receives from the priest Ahimelech the sword of Goliath, the giant he had once defeated.
David had fled empty-handed and was seeking a weapon, but what he received there was the sword of Goliath, whom he had defeated in his youth through God’s help.
This is interpreted as God’s providence, serving as a visual reminder that ‘the God who once granted victory is still with me’ even amidst present hardships.
David’s words were not merely a praise of the sword’s practical qualities; they were also a confession of faith that the memory of the victory God had granted him was his greatest source of support in his present circumstances.
At the same time, it highlights the harshness of life on the run and the frailty of human nature: the very David who had once declared, ‘I will not rely on sword or spear, but on the name of the Lord,’ and defeated Goliath, now found himself so cornered that he had no choice but to rely on a human weapon (a sword).
Yet God did not leave David to remain in his human weakness.
God used the very sword of Goliath, which David had wielded when he defeated him, to remind him of the God who had worked during that battle.
And David must have realised the price paid for his own sin of trying to protect himself and cope with his fear on his own, and repented from the heart.
No matter what state we are in, God does not abandon us, but is always ready to grant forgiveness in response to true repentance.
When we choose to accept God’s love rather than dwell on our pain, we are forgiven, healed and restored in His love.
