1 Samuel 21:2 David went to Ahimelech the priest at Nob. Ahimelech, who greeted David with concern, asked him, ‘Why are you alone? Where are your men?’
This is the scene in which David, whilst fleeing from King Saul, tells a ‘lie’ to the priest Ahimelech.
David was desperately fleeing from King Saul’s murderous intent and found himself in a vulnerable state, hungry and unarmed.
In order to seek help, he instinctively told a lie, claiming he was ‘acting on the king’s orders’.
Later on, this lie became the catalyst for a tragedy in which the priest Ahimelech and his family were massacred by Saul.
Even a man of faith like David, when overcome by fear, tries to resolve the situation through his own wisdom (a lie) rather than relying on God; this illustrates human frailty.
In extreme situations, or when others fail to understand our circumstances, we may lie or make excuses to protect ourselves.
It is only when these tactics fail that we finally cry out to God for help.
Once we have sought God, it does not mean we will automatically seek Him from then on.
We must seek God anew each time.
God does not reproach us for our failures; rather, He teaches us to look up to Him in our failures and to return to Him.
David was a weak human being, just like us.
That weakness is God’s grace, leading us onto the path of boasting in Him.
