Gospel Reflections #951: Whom God has Anointed

1 Samuel 19:10 "Then Saul aimed at David to pin him to the wall, but David eluded Saul, and the spear stuck into the wall. David fled and escaped that night."

This depicts a tense scene where King Saul attempts to kill David.

The verse describes Saul hurling his spear at David, who was playing the lyre, intending to pin him to the wall, but David evaded it and escaped. 

As stated in previous verses, an 'evil spirit' from the Lord had come upon Saul, driving him to intense jealousy and obsession.

Though reconciliation seemed possible through Jonathan's intercession, Saul's fear and hostility towards David remained unabated.

This incident forced David to flee from Saul's court, marking the beginning of his life in exile.

Yet the spear Saul hurled stuck in the wall and did not strike David.

This symbolises God's protection of David and His continued plan for him to become the next king.

The small negative thoughts within our hearts lead to negative actions.

For us, meditation is necessary to pause and change direction when we become aware.

Moreover, David fled rather than fighting in response to Saul's actions.

Fleeing may often be perceived as defeat or weakness, yet David acted not for victory or defeat, but to respond faithfully to Saul, whom God had anointed.

There is no neutrality for human beings.

We are either of Saul's type or of David's type.

It is less about which type we are now, and more about which type we wish to become.

God receives our very thoughts.
