Gospel Reflections #932: It's not what we can or cannot do

Psalm 19:14 "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer."

This is the concluding prayer of a psalm composed by David, a profoundly personal confession of faith in which he asks God not only for purity in outward actions but also for the sanctification of his inner being—his words and thoughts.

It calls us to be conscious not merely of outward good deeds, but whether what we think within our hearts (our motives) is acceptable before God.

It is impossible to become 'sinless' through human effort alone. It is essential to surrender ourselves to God, our Redeemer, and pray for purification and help.

This prayer is a vow to place all our words and thoughts in daily life under God's rule.

Even when we understand this, we often place ourselves at the centre rather than God.

Rather than fixating on what we can or cannot do, we should examine our hearts regarding whether we truly desire to surrender ourselves to God.

The more we come to know what kind of God He is, the more we are led to thoughts like those of David.
