Revelation 3:18 "Therefore I urge you. Buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may be rich. Buy white garments to put on, that you may not be ashamed of your nakedness; and eye drops to put on your eyes, that you may be able to see."
In his letter to Laodicea, Jesus said, "You say that you are rich, that you are prosperous, that you have no want, but in fact you yourself are the wretched, the pitiful, the poor, the blind, and the naked. You do not realize that you are naked." He rebukes us for our unawareness.
Jesus is telling us to focus on the reality of our character, not on our earthly position, honor, merit, or effort.
But Jesus offers us not only a rebuke but also a solution.
The "gold refined by fire" is the unadulterated gold of faith and love.
The "white robe" is the righteousness of Christ, the wedding garment that only He can give.
The "eye drops" are true spiritual discernment, which is so scarce among us.
They are not something we can obtain by our own efforts.
Jesus says, "Buy from Me."
These can only be obtained from Jesus, and if we ask Him for them, we will get them for free.
Jesus knows well what we lack.
He wants to give it to us.
If we ask not for what we want, but for what we lack, Jesus is willing to give it to us.
If we respond honestly to Jesus' ministry, we will be made aware of our spiritual deficiencies and will be led to ask Him for them.
