Luke 7:16 “All the people were afraid and praised God, saying, "The Great Prophet has appeared among us", and "God has taken his people to heart".
This verse is preceded by the account of how the Lord came upon a widow whose only son had died and was being sent for burial, and how the Lord had such deep compassion for the woman that He raised her dead son.
Seeing this, the people said, as in this scripture.
The people praised God not only because their dead son came back to life, but also because Jesus came to them, who had no name, and changed their 'despair' into 'hope and joy', which they could not even think of asking for.
Our first encounter with God may be a miraculous event.
But our relationship with God is not connected only by miracles, and as we repeatedly experience Jesus' presence with us and his care for our ordinary daily events, our trust in him grows and grows. It fills us with more and more joy and gratitude, and makes us want to come to Jesus before he knocks on the door of our hearts.
And our hearts will be filled with Jesus, even as we learn humility.
