Matthew 1:5-6 (New International Version ) "6 and Jesse the father of King David."
The first verse of Matthew's Gospel tells us that Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, is of noble birth, connected to King David. However, David was guilty of adultery with Uriah's wife, sending Uriah into a dangerous war zone where he was killed.
God rebuked David through the prophet, and David repented and was forgiven. Why was the story of adultery and murder behind this passage of Scripture put in the genealogy of Jesus? Because human beings, even the most famous human beings, even kings, even those with great accomplishments, are sinful and flawed.
The Bible does not hide it, but represents man as he is, affected by sin. Jesus came as a Savior because we humans desperately needed a Savior. We must fully acknowledge how much we are affected by sin and that we cannot do anything about it on our own, and then acknowledge and rely on the One who rescues us from sin, so that we can repent and have our sins covered by Jesus.
God is not pleased that we do not sin, but that we turn to Him, realizing that we are sinners and that only He can do something about this. We experience God's love and forgiveness when we truly surrender to ourselves and depend on Jesus' power!
