Gospel Reflections #1136: Within our hearts

Psalm 40:7–8 ‘Then I said, “Here I am; I have come—it is written about me in the scroll. I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”’

This is a crucial passage that illustrates the core message of the entire Bible: what God truly seeks is not merely formal sacrifices, but obedience from the heart.

At that time, the people of Israel performed the ritual of ‘sacrifice’, offering animals to seek forgiveness for their sins or to express gratitude.

However, David recognised that what God truly sought was not the ritual itself.

The phrase ‘You have opened my ears’ in verse 6 means ‘You have enabled me to listen carefully to God’s word, to understand it, and to obey it’.

It teaches that true worship consists not of formal religious acts, but of a ‘living, personal relationship with God’ and ‘obedience’. 

The ‘scroll’ refers to what was known at that time as the Law of God (the Bible).

Primarily, this expresses an awareness that the king (such as David) has been appointed as a leader who must live in accordance with God’s Law. Yet, more than that, it is also a confession of faith that ‘my entire future life is inscribed within God’s magnificent plan’. 

The phrase ‘Your statutes are within my heart’ refers not to reluctant obedience born of a sense of duty, but to a state in which God’s teachings are deeply engraved upon the heart, and doing what pleases God becomes one’s greatest joy.

As we live our lives in faith, we should always remember how much more important it is to ‘listen to God’s voice and follow His will with heartfelt joy’ than to merely ‘fulfil religious duties in name only’. 

It is precisely because God works within our hearts when we choose to listen to His voice that we are able to obey His will with genuine joy.

It is not by our own strength, but through God’s work.
