Psalm 94:22 ‘But the Lord is my strong tower; my God is a rock of refuge.’

These are words of faith declaring that, even in a world rife with injustice and evil, God is the absolute shield (a safe haven) who protects those who believe in Him.

In the preceding verse 21, it says, ‘They conspire to take the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.’

This depicts a crisis in which powerful evildoers are unjustly judging and cornering the weak and the righteous.

Verse 22 begins with the word ‘but’.

It expresses a reversal of faith: no matter how desperate the circumstances may seem, and however triumphant the wicked may appear, it is not the wicked but God who reigns over reality.

David compares God’s nature to a ‘stronghold’—the image most easily understood by the people of his time. This refers to a fortress built on high ground, absolutely beyond the reach of the enemy’s attacks.

It signifies that God lifts us up and protects us in a safe haven beyond the reach of human power.

The ‘rock of refuge’ refers to the fact that, in ancient battles or attacks by wild beasts, the crevices and caves of sturdy rocky mountains were the safest places to hide. It symbolises a sure sense of security that remains unshaken no matter what happens.

Even in modern society, we may face unreasonable relationships, stress, or insurmountable difficulties.

This psalm advises us not to try to fight with our own strength, but to ‘take refuge in God and make that your safe haven’.

In the context leading up to verse 23, it is stated that the wicked will ultimately destroy themselves through their own evil deeds.

This verse leads us to a ‘quiet trust’ that, even if we are currently in the midst of suffering, God sees everything and will ultimately bring about justice.

Through faith, we receive assurance in God and peace in Him.

Let us receive the grace of the invisible God with certainty through our faith.
