Gospel Reflections #1133: A prayer that is raw and honest

Psalm 10:1 ‘Why, O Lord, do you stand far off, hiding yourself in times of trouble?’
This scripture expresses the frank lament and questioning of a person of faith regarding ‘God’s silence’ or ‘the sense of God’s absence’ felt amidst senseless suffering.
In this passage, David is confronted with the reality of the wicked running rampant and the weak being oppressed.
Although this is a situation in which God ought, in principle, to intervene immediately and mete out judgement, David is overwhelmed and anguished by the absurdity of it all—it seems as though God is ‘standing far off’ or ‘deliberately hiding Himself’.
Whilst Psalm 9 sings of trust and praise, declaring that ‘God is a King who judges righteously’, Psalm 10 takes a sharp turn, confronting the harsh reality that ‘yet in reality, are not the wicked prevailing?’
Faith in the Bible is not merely positive thinking. It is precisely because of our trust in God that this verse encapsulates the ‘authenticity of prayer’—the ability to direct our anger and sorrow, asking ‘Why aren’t you helping me now?’, straight to God.
This scripture gives voice to the state of mind we experience in those moments when we face unjust suffering in life and feel that ‘there is no God or Buddha’.
It is important to note that the Bible does not dismiss such protests (lamentations) against God as unbelief, but rather accepts them as legitimate words of prayer.
Even as we vent our grievances to God, we still cling to Him; by turning towards God just as we are, He certainly receives us.
Faith is a way of life in which we trust God completely.
It is precisely in times of suffering that we wish to put our faith into practice.
It is when we turn our eyes not to our trials but to God that we are healed in His mercy and grace.
