Psalm 62:1–2 ‘My soul yearns for God alone; my salvation comes from God. He is my rock, my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.’
This is a truly beautiful confession of faith, singing of absolute trust in God and tranquillity (silence) even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
David found himself in a desperate situation—one beyond human control—facing attacks from enemies and betrayal.
When people feel anxious, they tend to make excuses, blame others, or complain.
However, David deliberately chose ‘silence’.
This silence is not resignation.
It is an attitude of strong trust, in which he quietens his own thoughts for a moment and waits intently to see ‘what God will do’.
David uses three powerful words to illustrate what God means to him.
‘Rock’ is a sturdy foundation that never wavers.
‘Salvation’ is the power that will surely lift him out of his current distress.
‘A high tower’ is a safe refuge that will never collapse, protecting him from the enemy’s attacks.
No matter how stormy the circumstances around him may rage, he declares with absolute certainty, ‘I shall never fall,’ because his foundation (God) is perfect.
Human strength, wealth and status can be shaken all too easily, but here lies the conviction that only those who rely on God remain unshaken.
Psalm 62:1–2 carries a powerful message that resonates with us today: ‘When your heart is troubled and on the verge of turmoil, cease relying on human words or wisdom; instead, look quietly to God and wait for His protection.’
When we look at ourselves or the circumstances before us, we sink into anxiety; yet, when we look to God’s promises—and to God Himself—we are mysteriously filled with assurance and courage.
May we trust in God at all times and pour out our hearts before Him.
For God is our perfect refuge.
