Gospel Reflections #1094: They are not God’s punishment on us

2 Samuel 13:1 ‘Some time later, the following incident occurred. Absalom, the son of David, had a beautiful sister named Tamar. Amnon, David’s son, was in love with Tamar.’

This is a crucial verse marking the beginning of the tragedy surrounding King David’s children: Amnon, Tamar and Absalom.

This brief passage sets in motion the grave sin that occurred within the royal family and the quagmire of conflict brought about by its consequences.

Amnon was David’s eldest son and the heir to the throne, whilst Tamar, Absalom’s sister, was a beautiful and noble full sister to Absalom—and, from Amnon’s perspective, his half-sister.

Amnon’s twisted infatuation with his half-sister Tamar paved the way for the subsequent rape and, ultimately, Absalom’s murder of Amnon.

The consequences of David’s sin with Bathsheba were slowly taking root, and David’s sons no longer obeyed their father or respected his counsel.

In the very areas where he had once been strong and courageous, David had now become weak and indecisive.

David was constantly haunted by a sense of shame; even when his children did wrong, he avoided holding them to account and allowed them to do as they pleased.

Even if we confess our sins to God and experience His forgiveness, we will still reap what we have sown.

God took our sins upon Himself, but He does not nullify the consequences of our sins.

Just as Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden after they sinned, they were led to reap what they had sown, yet God clothed them in garments made from animal skins.

Here, God simultaneously grants us His protection and the grace of His presence.

Although the consequences of our sin may sometimes bring us pain and sorrow, this is not God’s punishment of us; rather, it is His love and mercy, intended to ensure that we do not forget Him and that we do not stray from His side.
