Gospel Reflections #1091: God is unchanging.

Psalm 77:7–8 ‘Will the Lord cast us off for ever? Will he never show us favour again? Has his compassion come to an end for ever, and will his promise fail for all generations?’

These verses depict the intense despair and inner conflict of a believer facing God’s silence amidst profound suffering.

David’s heart was often deeply shaken during his journey of faith.

When David deeply understood God’s ways and will, he felt lifted up; yet when he encountered aspects that seemed to contradict God’s mercy and unchanging love, he felt as though everything was shrouded in darkness.

However, it is in that darkness that God nurtures our faith.

It was within that darkness that David rediscovered God’s character, and this strengthened his faith.

Through tears and prayer, David came to understand God’s character more clearly.

David realised that the exaggerated image of God’s severity he had harboured was a false impression arising from his own weakness, ignorance and the limitations of his flesh; recognising it as a thought that insulted God, he cast it aside.

And so, David renewed his faith.

In Psalm 77, David confronted his own heart, searched his soul, and came to know what sort of person he truly was.

Then, by recalling the Lord’s works, he reaffirmed and became convinced of what sort of God He is.

God will never forsake us.

For God is unchanging.

It is we who are constantly changing; our perspective shifts instantly depending on the state of our hearts and our circumstances, and because we view God from that state, we perceive Him as having changed.

Yet God is with us in our darkness, and it is there that we are granted an encounter with Him.
