Gospel Reflections #1089: But to Only Cling to God

Psalm 51:12 ‘Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.’

This verse expresses David’s deep repentance, born of his awareness of his sin, and his fervent prayer for God to recreate him from within.

Psalm 51 is set against the backdrop of a grave sin committed by King David of ancient Israel.

He took Bathsheba, the wife of his subordinate Uriah, and, to cover up his sin, had Uriah killed in battle.

When the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin, he realised the gravity of his mistake.

It expresses David’s complete dependence on God, recognising that he cannot ‘clean’ his defiled heart himself, but must be ‘made anew’ by God’s hand.

David seeks not merely a correction of his actions, but a transformation of his very nature (heart and spirit).

It is a message of hope: no matter how grave our sins, God will not reject sincere repentance, but will renew us.

When we, too, are shown our true nature and are forced to face it, we keenly realise that there is nothing we can do on our own, and that we have no choice but to cling to God.

And when we confess our true selves to God, we are granted peace through His mercy, compassion and forgiveness, and are led to take a step towards hope.
