Gospel Reflections #1088: Not Just Confession, It is a Decision to Change

Psalm 32:5 ‘I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.’

This scripture teaches us that the moment David confessed his sins to God without concealing them, he was granted complete forgiveness and freedom of heart.

Just before verse 5, David describes the mental and physical anguish he experienced whilst continuing to hide his sins, saying, ‘My bones trembled and wasted away’ and ‘I was parched as by the summer heat’.

Verse 5 marks a major turning point, where David, having reached his limit, makes the decision to ‘confess’.

Here, David uses three distinct terms—‘sin’, ‘iniquity’ and ‘transgression’—in succession.

This signifies a thorough repentance, in which he made no excuses whatsoever for his faults but laid everything bare before God exactly as it was.

The moment David resolved in his heart to ‘confess’ and opened his mouth, God immediately forgave him of the guilt of his sin.

This emphasises God’s deep mercy: He does not wait for our confession to condemn us, but to forgive and restore us.

When we try to hide our sins, deceit takes root in our hearts and we lose our inner well-being.

Laying aside our pride and being honest before God is the only path to freedom of heart.

Confessing our sins is only meaningful when accompanied by repentance.

We are not forgiven merely by acknowledging our sins.

Repentance involves not only grieving over our sins but also a decision to banish them from our lives.

God is always ready to forgive our sins when we sincerely seek His forgiveness.

Like David, we too should confess our sins to God honestly and sincerely, just as they are, without excuses or justifications.

God is eagerly awaiting this.
